Program Description: The AS degree in Criminal Justice is designed for students who hope to work in the field of law enforcement, corrections or public safety. The AS degree in Criminal Justice provides students with a valuable credential when applying for such jobs as police officer, corrections officer, state trooper/state officer, US Customs/Immigration inspector and community/police service aide. The AS degree does not qualify students for state certification as a law enforcement or corrections officer. To become certified as a corrections or law enforcement officer a student must complete a Florida state certified Basic Recruit Training Program (Police Academy or Corrections Academy). Students are required to complete 24 credits of elective courses for the AS. These listed courses are the recommended electives for the AS to maximize the TCs earned; however, students may choose electives from any college level course or any of the criminal justice elective options.

MAC1105C COREQUISITE COLLEGE ALGEBRA is a 5-credit course. Students who register for this course must see an advisor to discuss their academic plan.
Students who do not pass the Computer Competency Test are required to take CGS1060C COMPUTER AND INTERNET LITERACY as an elective.
Students that anticipate transferring to FAU’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice program, should take two foreign language courses for their electives due to the program’s foreign language requirements. Students do have the option of taking CLEP exams for the foreign language courses. Should students not take two foreign language courses or take CLEP exams for those courses, then students who have completed their A.A. or A.S. that transfer into FAU’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice program will have to take the two foreign language courses at FAU which will be in addition to the 60 credits needed to complete their bachelor’s.
Students must satisfy the Digital Literacy requirement by testing out, completing a Credit for Prior Learning portfolio, or passing CGS1060C COMPUTER AND INTERNET LITERACY.

Program Learning Outcomes
Graduates from this program will:
- Understand the procedural aspects and methodology employed in the investigative process. The student will know the elements of preliminary and follow-up investigations, to include methods of crime scene search, collection and preservation of evidence, and chain of custody concepts.
- Demonstrate proficiency with explaining the US Court System and its relation to the US Constitution.
- Demonstrate their understanding of overcrowding in the jails and prisons and the functional design of the prison facility to meet an institution's needs.
- Discuss the relationships between the various criminal justice agencies and be able to trace the steps from arrest to prosecution, probation, parole, sentence to jail or prison, rehabilitation and community support for offenders.
- Demonstrate the ability to effectively demonstrate written communication skills.
