Survey of American Literature (AML)

AML2010  AMERICAN LITERATURE: COLONIAL TO 1900  (3.00 Credits)
Students will be introduced to works which represent the diverse literature emerging from America up until 1900. This survey of major American authors, literary works, and themes from colonial times through reconstruction (may include up to the turn of the century) focuses on the recognition of the major characteristics of early American literature. Works may be selected from authors such as Anne Bradstreet, James Fenimore Cooper, Kate Chopin, Emily Dickinson, Frederick Douglass, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet Jacobs, Thomas Jefferson, Sarah Orne Jewett, Herman Melville, Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Rowlandson, Nat Turner, Mark Twain, and Walt Whitman. AML2010 is a writing credit course. Students must earn a minimum grade of C to meet the requirements of the Gordon Rule for writing. AML2010 meets the International/ Intercultural competency requirement.

AML2020  AMERICAN LITERATURE 1900-PRESENT  (3.00 Credits)
Students will be introduced to works which represent the diverse literature emerging from America since 1900. This survey course will focus on American writers since 1865. Topics include major trends in realism, naturalism, and may be selected from major authors such as Hemingway, Faulkner, Frost, Hughes, Millay, Plath, Ellison, Baldwin, Oates, Angelou, and Roth. Upon successful completion of the course students will understand the significant concepts, contexts movements, figures, and works of American literature in the 20th and 21st century. AML2020 is a writing credit course. Students must earn a minimum grade of C to meet the requirements of the Gordon Rule for writing. AML2020 meets the International/ Intercultural competency requirement.

AML2600  AFRICAN AMERICAN LITERATURE  (3.00 Credits)
Students will be introduced to works that represent African American literature since 1746. Upon successful completion of the course, students will understand the significant concepts, contexts movements, figures, and works of African American literature since 1746. AML2600 is a writing credit course. Students must earn minimum grade of C to meet the requirements of the Gordon Rule for writing. AML2600 meets the International/Intercultural competency requirement.

AML2631  HISPANIC AMERICAN LITERATURE  (3.00 Credits)
This course will survey literature by Hispanic Americans throughout history, with an emphasis on contemporary works, issues of varied influences, culture disenfranchisement, agency, identity and inclusion will be among those considered. The student will develop an understanding of the Hispanic American experience and its rich literary traditions. AML2631 is a writing credit course. Students must earn a minimum grade of C to meet the requirements of the Gordon Rule for writing. AML2631 meets the International/ Intercultural competency requirement.
